Lake Mwegenyi is the most mesmerizing lake in Kabarole District in Western Uganda on the edge of Kibale Forest National Park approximately 6 hour drive from the capital of Kampala. Mwegenyi lake is a crater lake that was formed through volcanic formation. The lake is situated in Bunyaruguru crater lake region, which is home to over 52 crater lakes with magnificent landscape and amazing volcanic crater lakes.

It is estimated that about 1,000 years ago the crater lakes in Bunyaruguru region were formed as result of Volcanic activity. There was intensive heat and the pressure in the upper mantle or interior of the earth, which was brought about by the geo-chemical reaction and radioactivity in the earth. As a result, flat depressions were formed, after the occurrence of gaseous exchange that blew off the surface rocks around the shaped unfairly. As time went by, rain water filled the depression hence the formation of the crater lakes.

This is evidenced by the existence of hot springs within the same vicinity, such as Kitagata hot spring.
