    Lake Lugembe lies in western Uganda along the foothills of the Mountain Rwenzori.  In western Uganda alone, there are about 89 small volcanic crater lakes that grouped into four clusters such as Fort Portal area, Kasenda area, Katwe-Kikorongo area, and Bunyaruguru area, Lake Lugembe is nestled in Kasenda area just opposite the lager lake in this region lake Kanyango.

    Western Uganda is commonly known as home to numerous volcanic crater lakes that scattered especially along the four regions. The lakes are very attractive once one decides to take a walk or photography experience. The walk takes about 2 hours and on the way, a visitor enjoy lakes includes Lugembe, Kabata, Lake Kifuruka campsite, Lake Nyinambuga, Lake Lyantonde, Lake Mwitampungu, Lake Rukwanzi, Lake Mwamba, and Lake Kanyango among others.

    Some of the lakes are embedded in a still rather a natural setting whereas the surroundings of many of the lakes studied are highly disturbed by anthropogenic activities. The lakes are commonly exploited as a water source for humans and livestock consumption. Furthermore, these lakes are also the main source of food for the local communities using them for fishing. Some of the fish species are introduced. For example, Tilapia zillii, Orechromis leucosticus and Poecilia reticulata were introduced in Lake Nkuruba and among others

    Lake Lugembe is formed by extensive volcanic activity that followed the formation of the Great East African Rift. Valley resulted into formation of several craters along with western Uganda including the Lake Lugembe, this later filled with water which was eventually inhabited by fish after the volcanoes became extinct or dormant. Visiting Lake Lugembe gives you an opportunity to explore some of the explosion crater lakes and explosion craters found along the Crater Lake trail which takes in Kibale National Park, Semuliki National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park and the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains.
