    Crater Safari Lodge is an upscale eco-lodge located near Kibale National Park headquarters facing the Nyinabulitwa crater lake. The lodge has a beautiful view of the lake, just a few minutes away from the lush green tropical rainforest of Kibale Forest National Park. The lodge is 26km away from Fort Portal town, and it is 5 hours drive from Kampala. Blending perfectly with the surrounding landscape, the lodge has been described as one of the most environmentally sensitive lodges in Uganda.

    Location of Crater Safari Lodge

    By road: Travel from Kampala through Mubende towards Fort Portal. Continue via Kamwenge route and branch off at the Crater Safari Lodge sign post on your right.

    • Kampala – Fort Portal = 320kms
    • Fort Portal – Crater Safari Lodge = 18kms

    Alternative route: Travel from Kampala crossing through the equator via Mbarara to Kasese. Continue on towards Fort Portal and Kibale National Park to Crater Safari lodge.

    • Kampala – Kasese = 440 kms
    • Kasese – Fort Portal = 100kms
    • Fort Portal – Crater Safari Lodge = 18km

    By air: Fly from Entebbe International airport to Kasese or Fort Portal Airstrip. Take a road transfer from the Airstrip to Crater Safari Lodge.

    • 21 rooms in total comprising 10 standard pool facing cabanas (double level) and 11 deluxe thatched chalets
    • 5 Deluxe chalets are facing the crater (two twins, three doubles – one of which is the honeymoon suite)
    • 6 Deluxe chalets are in the gardens with a partial crater view (two of these are family cottages which are joined, the other 2 are stand alone cottages with double beds)
    • 3 chalets have baths, while the rest have expansive showers
    • Family chalet has inter-leading rooms with 2 double beds and 4 single beds in total. If needed, Deluxe chalets have space for an extra bed,

    Activities at Crater Safari Lodge

    Chimpanzee tracking

    The most popular activity at the lodge is the guided chimpanzee tracking walks in the Kibale Forest National Park. As well as being one of the best places in Uganda to see chimpanzees, guests should also look out for the black and white colobus monkey, red-tailed monkey and grey-cheeked mangabey, as one is doing the chimp tracking

    Chimpanzee habituation experience

    Accompany Kibale’s researchers for the day, as they follow chimpanzees going about their daily activities, getting them used to human presence without altering their natural behavior. The Chimpanzee habituation experience provides a unique opportunity to observe the chimps coming out of their nocturnal nests between 5.30am and 6.30am before following their movements throughout the day until they create new nests and retire for the night around 7pm.

    Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary

    Take a guided walk through the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, known for its wide range of wildlife, including 138 bird species, chimpanzees, red colobus, black and white colobus and other mammals, such as the sitatunga, bushbuck, otter and mongoose. Spot the wetlands abundant wildlife from viewing platforms and a boardwalk trail.

    Semuliki National Park

    Visit the Sempaya Hot Springs and enjoy the rich birdlife and other animals that inhabit the park. You can opt for bird watching in the park, as it stand out to be one of the most loved birding destination.
